The exquisite White Heron and its ancestral nesting site on the Waitangiroto River in New Zealand's South Westland spell a magic allure. To the Maori the Kotuku, or White Heron, has long been revered as a sacred bird and has come to symbolize everything that is beautiful and rare. For centuries the White Heron returned to the same nesting trees above the tranquil flowing river of the swamp fore...

Freshwater Dive
Переглядів 1099 місяців тому
This award-winning short film explores Te Waikoropupū Springs. The springs fully live up to New Zealand’s 100% Pure brand, with some of the clearest water known (a 1993 study measured visibility to 63 metres). After visiting the springs' ‘dancing sands’, three divers take a down river run: going with the flow of the 14,000 litres per second discharged from the springs (here the classical score ...

The Whanganui concert was staged aboard the paddle steamer 'Waimarie', moored at its jetty, with the audience invited to picnic with blankets, cushions and low picnic chairs along the river bank. "A large screen was set up for close-ups of the performers, the sound system was spectacular, and the concert is an absolute one-off - purely to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the school.
Paddlewheels on the Wanganui Trailer
Переглядів 192Рік тому
Recall the exciting days when the old paddle steamers plied their way up the two hundred and thirty nine rapids between Whanganui and Taumarunui. In the years between 1912 and 1919, David Reid was an engineer on boats of the famous Hatrick fleet - among them being the Wairua, the Whakapai and the Wai-iti. These vessels were the lifeline, of the pioneer farms and Maori settlements of the river v...

The Ghost Town Ball trailer
Переглядів 78Рік тому
In 1905, gold prospectors stumbled on to a rich quartz reef in a remote West Coast Valley and the mining town of Waiuta soon sprang up. Following the nine's sudden closure in 1951 as the result of a cave in, Waiuta became a ghost town virtually overnight. The inhabitants of the town departed believing they would never meet again. In 1986 former residents decided to hold a reunion weekend amid t...

A very very good not mucked up with too much music.
Why the need for silly dramatic background music 👎🏼🙁
Great Video Graeme, my only reason to comment is I am a Manawatu resident, thanks for sharing
Love this, real nostalgia trip. Thanks so much for posting. I've taken this trip so many times, its great to re-live it 😊
Great nostalgia trip, thanks so much for sharing this. Loved it. 😊
First travelled to Waikanae from Wellington in 2011. As to get away from all of the Seismic Activity. I have travelled to Hamilton in 1985 via The Northerner...in November of that year
Nice video
The speed of these trains is low. On Cape gauge speeds can be up to 160 km/h (100 mph). Most of the line is straight enough for a speed of 130km/h (80 mph).
Yeah I agree the line speed of these could of 100% gone atleast 140 on the straights
Buggar. Well done for what you did
Thank you Ian for your efforts over many years to keep steam history alive in New Zealand. Also for getting a team together to do what is necessary to repair, run and keep your vision alive.
Very cool! Thanks
Thank you Ian for your work to save steam in New Zealand I will meet you one day and shake your hand
This so clearly shows why we still do need rail enabled ferries for the replacement fleet. Nicola Willis, are you watching, are you learning this?
Came to see the insides of the tunnel, guess the head lights on those old Ganz units were weaksauce, but also, fast forwarded? 😢
Been on them, absolutely wonderful between the two islands.
The correct spelling is Wanganui. I was born in Pipiriki & have lived in Idaho for 40yrs.
It's Wanganui not whanganui.
It's a regional difference.
Agree, it's Wanganui
The northernmost tributary is 60km north of Tongariro in Pureora Forest at the Forest Tower,
My first viewing of this was just now. And this video is such an entertaining and informative collection. What a taste of good feelings when amazing vision and effort comes together! This is what makes UA-cam worth tuning in to. Thanks to everyone involved!🚂🚃🛤
When was this filmed
always a great trip, I've often grabbed a Day Metlink Pass when holidaying in Wellington. The run along the "P-Coast" (most of the locations have names starting with P) is a good day out.
Thank you for another interesting video. All the best from Sydney Australia 🇦🇺
56:50. Gloria Welsh! We used to live next door to the them at 361 Stokes Valley Rd, Stokes Valley. Good memories thanks. Laurie Carroll. 😊
I cant help wondering if hydrogen fuel cells/new sodium batteries or perhaps LiFe electric batteries and other current new tech (glass cockpits, wifi service, food n beverage, carpets etc). would enable these back into service? Nothing stopping private rail companies operating services here in NZ like they do in Japan etc. Laurie. 😅😊🎉
The same Spiers that lived in Stokes Valley? They were friends of my parents. Laurie. NZ. 😊
Great Video, I trained to and from welly a few times, it's good to be able to view the trip from home, thanks for sharing
Great video
Thank you for this video!! The old video of the Eo’s was fabulous
I miss this journey. Taken it many many times.
NZ's EE EMU's - SOUTHERN RAILWAY UK 4SUB EMU SIMILARITIES !! Amusing. These English Electric EMU's, when I visited Wellington in 1986 were still in operation on the Johnston branch. What I discovered however (being a British Railways Mechanical Engineer) was that the EE control & Westinghouse straight air brake equipment on these 1,500v DC overhead units, was identical to the Southern Railway's 4SUB (4-car SUBurban) 750v DC Third Rail standard Gauge EMU's introduced in 1941 by the famous Southern CME Oliver Vaughan Snell Bulleid (originally from New Zealand). Indeed driving one of your units revealed that the handling & braking even felt & sounded similar to the British version. One of which is preserved (unit 4732). Although Bulleid was probably more famous for his Air Smoothed Pacifics, 30 x Merchant Navy Class & 110 x West Country Class) he built during & after WW2. Twenty of which are preserved !!!
What is sad is New Zealand politicians who are vandals destroying New Zealand Rail !
Well done. Where are things at now?
What a wonderful concert. Bravissimi tutti!
dont look like ngaporo
Awesome! We've got our own our little Kestrel resto project going on too. Hope it turns out as good as yours 😊
Hi, i'm from the UK and just wondering why you get a red light above the green?
It is my understanding that the top light indicates the track/block status for the straight ahead or main track, and the bottom light indicates the track/block status of the side track. So in the case of the red light over the green light, the top red light indicates that the track/block ahead along the straight or main track is not to be entered as there may be another train ahead. The bottom green light indicates that the side track is clear and can be entered by the train without restriction. However, usually the switch/points on the tracks ahead of the train are aligned/positioned so that the train can only go along the track as specified by the position of the switch/points. In this case here, the train can only go into the side track, and it is physically impossible for the train to proceed ahead along the straight ahead or main track anyway.
Sounds a bit like one of the now retired Ganz units.
It certainly was thanks to Trans Metro, and was filmed to be part of a documentary about 'The Father of Wellington' John Plimmer and the Wellington and Manawatu Railway Company, that will hopefully be completed sometime later this year.
As much as I appreciate the newer Matangi units, I sometimes miss the ability to look out the front window of the English Electrics and the North bound Ganzes.
Great video! I had no idea that this line existed! I really hope that the railway trust can get it back up and running again!
Mai te Kahui Maunga ki Tangaroa Ko Au te Awa Ko te Awa ko Au Its awesome to see these old boats traveling our River,Awa Awesome history
Thank you for sharing this video. Interesting to see the searchlight signals, since replaced, in a couple of places.
I understand that there is (or was?) another tunnel between the "Neptune" and "Brighton" tunnels, which was decommissioned in 1900 due to safety concerns. For a while the northern portal was visible back in the 1980s, but it's pretty much inaccessible these days.
Correct. It was bypassed because the land was unstable, and I believe a driver lost an eye to a brick that was dislodged from the lining. Despite that, it's still there in the hill
A piece of history, with, amongst other things, the now retired Ganz EMUs, the footbridge at Kaiwharawhara, and the old Tawa station. There have been some changes over the years! Thank you for sharing.
nice job!!!
What a great video. Brought back many memorious of travelling from Palmerston North to Napier and Gisborne on the Fiat Rail Cars in the 60's after catching the overnight Express from Auckland
This must have been a while back. Saw mechanical bells at paekakariki, plimmerton and redwood. Beautiful scenic ride tho.
Looking at the road, it looks to be prior to the Kapiti expressway. But obviously it was after Feb 2011, since the electrification before that terminated at Paraparaumu. I'm guessing this was about 2012/2013. Also from the sound of the train I think it's a Ganz-Mavag. Which are no longer in service.
@@DevilofdoomI think there's a surviving Ganz unit at Ferrymead, possibly the "super Ganz" upgraded one. Ferrymead also has examples of Eo (from Otira) and Ec (Christchurch) locomotives. They also have an English Electric set that was in use in Wellington before the introduction of the Ganz units in the 1980s and the Matangi early in the 2010s. I recall travelling through the Lyttelton tunnel on a train hauled by an Ec, back when I was little.
@richardvoogd705 Yes ferrymead has the super ganz hope it does see an original restoration it has been sitting there for years untouched
